Virgin fiber: vegetable packaging for chocolate

What factors should be taken into account when choosing the material in which to present chocolate? There are companies which are specialists in packaging that rely on cardboard, but not all. The Belgian company Du Caju Printing & Packaging, which 11% of the total packaging is associated with chocolates, just released The Origin Box, a box made of virgin fiber manufactured by James Cropper, a finalist for the European packaging Pro Carton ECMA Awards.

The Origin Box is made with three kinds of paper-based material, two of which -Invercote and Incada- are produced by Iggesund Paperboard. The advantages of vegetable fiber are being supported by one of Du Caju’s customers, the chocolate maker Barry Callebaut, which subjects the entire packaging material to up to 60 days of testing in its own sensory laboratory.

The launch of this packaging opens a debate on how mineral oils found in material made from recycled fiber can contaminate food. If it is found that most certainly virgin fiber avoids the problems of contamination, odor and migration, then it can be a very good option for all food products, not just chocolate.
